Petkovich named East Squad MVP

(July 3, 2008) - Loudoun County High School graduate Morgan Petkovich was named the East squad's MVP in yesterday's VHSCA All Star Volleyball game at Christopher Newport University.  Morgan led the East to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) victory over the West squad with her 14 kills.  Morgan was joined on the East team by teammate Rebecca Dancy and Coach Jenica Matthias.  All three were selected by the coaches association as All Stars for their accomplishments in the 2007 AA State Title campaign. Click here for much more coverage of the All-Star games.

The College Vision Student Athlete of the Year was chosen by the LoudounPrepSports.com staff and reflects a three-sport varsity Loudoun public high school athlete that also excelled as a student off the court and was a true team player and leader on the court.

Kaseman Wins First of Five LCJGA Summer Tournaments

(June 29, 2008) - The first tournament of the LCJGA Master's Division was held at Algonkian Golf Course on Monday, June 23.  Thirteen players competed. Ted Simpson, Algonkian's golf pro, announced each player as they stepped up to the tee.  Austin Kaseman (Loudoun Valley H.S.) won the tournament with a score of 79, Tyler Campos (Broad Run H.S.) placed second with a score of 81, and Scott Trump (Potomac Falls H.S.),scored an 84 for third place.  This was the first of five tournaments to be played this summer.

(June 28, 2008) - Park View High School graduate Natalie Baird took first place in the young women's discus throw yesterday, with toss of 45.49m/149-3., at the 2008 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Baird will compete in the hammer throw today.

(June 28, 2008) - After finishing the season 24-0 and AA State Champs, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA/adidas) rankings has the Broad Run High School soccer team finishing the year as #14 in the nation:

(June 27, 2008) - The Loudoun FuZe BLUE team battled great competition, the weather, and roster challenges ... and defeated each in route to winning the Summer Getaway HS-A Championship.  Team play was highlighted by tenacious defense, skilled and unselfish offense, and tremendous athleticism across the field.   The team of rising-12th and 11th graders included players and coaches from multiple high schools including Broad Run, Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls, and Stone Bridge.  With the win comes an automatic birth in the Tournament of Champions National High School Club Championship in Tampa in January 2009.

Ranger Wrestling Club Competes in Dirty South Wrestling Camp

(June 26, 2008) - The Ranger Wrestling Club, a youth wrestling club in Loudoun County, competed in the Dirty South Wrestling Camp at South County High School June 19-22.  This was the first time, in which the club competed as a team in an event.   The Rangers hale from multiple high schools in Loudoun: Heritage (H), Broad Run (BR), Briar Woods (BW), Loudoun Valley (LV) and Loudoun County (LC), and one wrestler that was from Battlefield High School (BAT) in Prince William.

Abt to Tee it Up at St. Andrews in College

(June 23, 2008) – 2008 Potomac Falls High School grad Chis Abt has received an academic and athletic golf scholarship to NCAA Division II St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.

Abt helped the Panthers advance to regional play the past two seasons. This summer, he’ll plays his last year in the Loudoun County Junior Golf Association’s Masters Division and will be playing in other MAPGA tournaments. He will also be helping golf pro Ted Simpson with camps at Algonkian.

PV Grad Baird ends Nike Nationals with Three Top 10 Finishes

GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 22, 2008) – Park View High School graduate Natalie Baird ended the Nike Outdoor Nationals at N.C. A&T State University with three top 10 finishes.

On Saturday, she placed third in the discus with a throw of 152-03 and seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 140-5.  She finished eighth in the shot put Friday with a mark of 43-07.25.

More Loudoun athletes: Loudoun was well represented at the meet with Broad Run's Sam Saidi 22nd in the high jump, Potomac Falls's Josh Hardin 21st in the 5K, Loudoun Valley's Theresa Trader 23rd in the 400 hurdles, Loudoun Valley's Lauren Privette 15th in the long jump and 24th in the triple jump. Also in the emerging elite category (one step below the top division), Trader took third in the 100 hurdles and Potomac Falls's Ryan Hagen was fifth in the 800. Click here for the complete results.

Baird finishes 8th in shot put at Nike Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 21, 2008) –  Natalie Baird is between her senior season at Park View High School and her freshman year at William and Mary and this recent grad sees this weekend’s Nike Outdoor Nationals at N.C. A&T State University as another opportunity to excel.

“I’ve got nothing to lose, just go out there and do my best,” Baird said after Friday’s shot put. Baird threw 43 feet, seven and a half inches, which was good enough for eighth place. That mark was near her average, she said.

Park View's Baird Named Girls Track Gatorade Athlete of the Year

Sterling (June 18, 2008) - Park View High School senior Natalie Baird has been named the 2007-08 girls track and field Gatorade Athlete of the Year for Virginia according to RiseMag.com.

Baird, who will compete in three events at the Nike Nationals this weekend, earned seven AA state titles in the discus and shot put and led the Patriots to back-to-back team state titles. She joins Broad Run pitcher Catilyn Delahaba as a Gatorade Player of the Year for 2007-08.

This is the fifth straight year that Loudoun has had at least one Gatorade Player of the Year and nine local athletes have taken home the award since 2001: Christy Anch (softball, 01-02), Adam McDaniel (boys soccer, 03-04), Blair Brown (volleyball, 04-05), Ed Wang (football, o4-05), Brown (volleyball, 05-06), Uche Onyeador (boys soccer, 06-07), Delahaba (softball, 06-07), Delahaba (softball, 07-08) and Baird (track, 07-8).

From 1985 to 2000, Loudoun only had one Gatorade Player of the Year: Scott Schultz (baseball, 90-91).

Greg Grimes Promoted to Heritage Boys Basketball Varsity Coach

Leesburg (June  18, 2008) - Heritage High School assistant boys basketball coach Greg Grimes has been promoted to the varsity head position to replace Mark Mallisham, who is taking over the Forest Park program.

Grimes, an assistant for Mallisham for the Pride's three consecutive AA Dulles District titles, is a former lawyer and graduate of Loudoun County High School and UVa.

"I'm excited," said Grimes. "I'm sure Mallisham and I will be talking every day next season."

For Grimes -- who previously coached and taught at Notre Dame Academy and now teaches business law, business management, accounting and advanced accounting at Heritage -- this is his first head varsity coaching position.

Grimes and Mallisham will have a chance to check out each other's teams next week when Heritage and Forest Park meet in summer basketball league action.

Double Spring State Titles Puts Broad Run in Top 10 Finish for 2007-08 VHSL Wachovia Cup

(June 18, 2008) - State titles in girls soccer and softball fueled Broad Run High School to a top 10 finish in the 2007-08 VHSL Wachovia Cup standings.

The Spartans finished No. 7 in the AA standings in the final standings for the Wachovia Cup, which goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall
record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports. BR finished with an area-best 212.5 points. Western Albemarle won the AA with 421.25 points followed by Blacksburg with 395.

Stone Bridge had the next highest point total with 147.5 for a 14th place finish in AAA. Valley had 129.1 points to place No. 20. Cox took AAA with 365 points followed by Chantilly with 280.

Potomac Falls was the only other local school to hit triple digits with 110 points to take 16th in AA. Click the headline for complete standings.

(June 17, 2008) - Nearly a dozen seniors from Loudoun will play in all-star contests this summer at the 2008 Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star weekend in the Hampton Roads area from July 1-4.

Raider Stevens to Wrestle at Limestone

Leesburg (June 17, 2008) - Loudoun County High School senior Tyler Stevens has committed to wrestle for Limestone College next season. Stevens was a standout wrestler at LCHS during his four years as a Raider, compiling a 116-32 record, that included two AA Dulles District championships.  Limestone College is located in Gafney, S.C. and competes at the Division II level.

 

Titan McCowat Signs with American International

Sterling (June 17, 2008) - Dominion High School senior will sign a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at American International College in Springfield, Ma.  The Yellow Jackets are a D2 school which plays in the Northeast 10 conference, considered one of the strongest D2 conferences in the nation.
